Your rest is important to your SPIRIT!

Lately, I have been so tired. I noticed I can barely get through to contribute to a good day of work. Not to mention, when I get home, I have little strength to do the things needed to ensure my home is peaceful, clean, relaxing and inviting. I am rushing home to cook, bathe, clean the dinner dishes and then, yes, rushing to bed.

When did this start to happen? When did life get so full? When did the days become shorter? When did I start counting the hours I’d get to sleep? What happened to all my energy? With all these questions in mind, let me acknowledge a few things. Natural patterns may be happening to cause sleep to become more difficult. Especially as a female (hormones), adding another factor of age, not to mention a long to do list and a million thoughts going on at one time. Before you know it, your alarm clock is going off. “Are you kidding me, I just went to sleep,” becomes a statement I make to myself. So, yes, you wake up tired and attempt to tackle your day again.

Now I am not saying these are the only reasons we are tired. Of course, there may be some other reasons which I would encourage you to see a doctor to rule out any medical causes. But in this blog, let’s focus on this. How is lack of rest affecting my spirit? I believe when we are tired it affects our character. We come across as short, rude and unapproachable. Does God get the glory out of that? OF COURSE NOT!

Learning to honor the body’s needs as a sacred part of our design constitutes soul work, says Lynn Harper.

So, what shall we do to address this? Great question. Here are a few things I’d recommend:

  1. Prioritize - what needs to get done

  2. Routine - as much as you can get one

  3. Set boundaries with others - how late do I answer texts, calls, etc.

  4. Set times to check on Facebook - don’t laugh this is big one and

  5. Be sure that you feed your spirit consistently.

  • You should have a consistent prayer, word, worship and praise time.

  • This is not last because it is least important.

  • But, if you struggle with 1-4 (above) more than likely 5 is out of order

Let me leave you with this scripture:

Genesis 2:2-3New King James Version (NKJV)

2 And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.

You see REST is spiritual. Lack of rest (sleep) can and will cause you to sin. Surely, you don’t want to walk into the devil’s trap of tiredness. Do you?
